In a Comparison/Contrast Essay, you must choose two subjects and examine how they are similar to and/or different from one another. The purpose of a comparison/contrast essay depends on the assignment, but the goal is often to show which of the two subjects is superior, more important, etc.

There are different styles of Comparison/Contrast Essays; however, in 125, you will be writing a Similarities/Differences essay, also known as the Block Method. This is a four-paragraph essay, containing an introductory paragraph, two body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. One body paragraph focuses entirely on the similarities between your two subjects while the second body paragraph focuses only on the differences. These two body paragraphs may be presented in either order.
