An essay prompt is a question or sentence that explains what you should write about.

Some essay prompts are questions. These are usually the easiest essay prompts.

  • What is your favorite genre of music?  Why?
  • If you could visit any country, which one would you visit?
  • What can America do to stop air pollution?

For a question prompt, you answer the question and then explain your reasons. Here are example outlines for the essay prompts above:

What is your favorite sport? Why? If you could visit any country, which one would you visit? What can America do to stop air pollution?
Introduction ….My favorite sport is soccer because it is fast and requires a lot of skill. ...I would visit England because I want to practice my English and see famous sites. ...To stop air pollution, America should increase punishment for air pollution and use more solar and wind power.
Body (explain how soccer is fast and why this is a good thing)

(explain how soccer requires lots of skill and why this is a good thing)
(explain how you could practice English in England)

(give examples of famous sites in England)
(explain your idea about punishment)

(explain why we should use more solar and wind power)
Conclusion Overall, because it is fast and requires a lot of skill, soccer is my favorite sport... In short, I hope to visit England someday so I can use my English skills and see exciting places... To summarize, we can stop air pollution if  punish  companies for air pollution and if we support solar and wind power .
