Concluding sentences make up the last paragraph of an essay. The conclusion paragraph usually contains a combination of these types of sentences:

  • transition
  • a restated thesis
  • big idea

Transition Sentence

The transition sentence lets the reader know that this is the final paragraph in the essay. Often, words or phrases like these are used:

  • Finally
  • In conclusion
  • Overall

Examples

  • Finally, learning a language in a new country is an excellent idea.
  • In conclusion, opportunities to travel should be taken whenever they are presented.

Restated Thesis

A restated thesis sentence often follows the transition sentence or may even be combined with the transition sentence. This sentence revists the main focus of the entire essay, but uses different words than the thesis at the end of the introduction paragraph. Do not repeat the thesis word for word like it was written in the introduction!

Examples

  • Improved pronunciation, cultural awareness, and native-like idioms are all benefits of learning a language in the country where it is spoken.
  • Traveling is always a good investment in yourself because it broadens your perspective or worldview, teaches appreciation of new cultures and ways of life, and provides opportunities to test your resiliency and ability to adapt to new situations.
