Americans use 100 billion plastic bags every year, costing retailers about $4 billion per year! Plastic is commonly used for bags because it's cheaper than other materials, such as paper or cloth. However, over time, the cost for both retailers and the environment is enormous. A lot of energy is used in the creation of plastic, and plastic does not break down as easily as other material. Because of it's long life, it can be dangerous for animals and even human children, who can sometimes suffocate to death. The best way to save money, natural resources, and lives is to reuse or recycle the plastic bags we already have and stop making new ones.
