This list of strategies for the CAEL Listening Assessment has been divided into three stages: Pre-Listening, Listening, and Review. If you follow these strategies for each stage, you will be better equipped for the Listening section.
Listening Strategies
Pre-Listening
- Review the questions to get a preview of what you'll be hearing.
- Review the questions so you know what information to listen for.
- Highlight key words or phrases in each question.
- Look at the point value for each question so you know how to use your time.
Listening
- Follow the instructions carefully.
- Use words or phrases to make notes.
- Use words or phrases to answer questions.
- Pay careful attention to numbers, names, and transitions.
Review
- Check to see what you've missed.
- Try to complete any incomplete answers.
