A singular subject needs a verb in the singular form, and a plural subject needs a verb in the plural form. Here are some basic examples of subject / verb agreement:

Singular Subject & Singular Verb

  • The driver goes to the race track.

Plural Subject & Plural Verb

  • The drivers go to the racetrack.

Subject Verb Agreement: Indefinite Pronouns

everything everyone everybody either
anything anyone anybody neither
nothing no one nobody one 

Indefinite pronouns are singular, so they need a singular form verb:

  • Everyone in the town helps clean up after the street race.
  • One of the people I met was a mechanic.
  • Neither of the cars is my favorite.
