Objectives & Sequence: This lesson is intended to be used as a preview of Grammar 3-2.

Part One

Work with a partner. Listen and practice the following conversations:

tire

A: How was your trip to Detroit? Did you enjoy it?

B: Yes, we had a wonderful time. I got to see the first affordable car ever made!

A: No kidding? What car is that?

B: It's the Ford Model T. I'd seen it before on the Internet, but it was cool to see it up close.

mechanic

A:Yesterday was pretty funny, wasn’t it?

B: What do you mean?

A: You know when Amanda tried to drive the stick shift with her dad.

B: Oh yeah. He was so scared.

A: I know. She hadn’t even practiced on one before.

B: Yeah. I think she figured it out though.

electric car

A: Did you find the truck you were looking for?

B: No, I couldn’t find one that was cheap enough.

A: Have you tried looking online? There are lots of deals.

B: I hadn’t even thought of that. I'll give it a try.

A: You should. That’s where I found my car.

stereo

A: Why are you turning around?

B: I think this GPS is broken. When we left, it was telling me to go west, but now it's telling me to go east.

A: Didn't you check the map before we left?

B: No, I didn't. I'd never had problems with this GPS before, so I thought we'd be okay.

A: Well, maybe before we head back, we should find a gas station and ask which way to go.

B: Yeah, you're probably right.

Part Two

Look at the blue words in the conversations above. This is called the Past Perfect Simple tense. With your partner, discuss what you know about this tense. What does it mean? When is it used? What does it mean in the conversations above?
